**Large-Scale Biomedical Science: Exploring Strategies for Future Research free epub by Committee on Large-Scale Science and Cancer Research, National Research Council, Sharyl J. Nass, Bruce W. Stillman**

The nature of biomedical research has been evolving in recent years. Technological advances that make it easier to study the vast complexity of biological systems have led to the initiation of projects with a larger scale and scope. In many cases, these l...

**Nanotechnology: Science, Innovation, and Opportunity epub download by Lynn E. Foster**

Inside the Emerging Multibillion-Dollar Nanotechnology Industry Suddenly, nanotechnology isn't science fiction or mere theory: It's becoming one of the world's fastest-growing, highest-impact industries. In Nanotechnology: Science, Innovation, and Opportu...

**Basic Research in Information Science and Technology for Air Force Needs epub download by Committee on Directions for the AFOSR Mathematics and Space Sciences Directorate Related to Information Science and Technology, National Research Council**

The U.S. Air Force is developing new force capabilities appropriate to an emerging array of threats. It is clear that advances in information science and technology (IS&T) are essential for most of these new capabilities. As a consequence, the Air Force i...

**Earth Materials and Health: Research Priorities for Earth Science and Public Health free pdf by Committee on Research Priorities for Earth Science and Public Health, National Research Council**

A range of natural earth materials, like arsenic or fluoride, have long been linked to significant human health effects. Improved understanding of the pervasive and complex interactions between earth materials and human health will require creative collab...

**Multimedia and Interactive Digital TV Managing the Opportunities Created Digital Convergence free download by Margherita Pagani**

Addressing the issues that managers in the multimedia industry have confronted while developing and implementing this innovative technology, this book focuses on the latest research and findings in digital television technologies. Covered are the major is...

**The Environment: Challenges for the Chemical Sciences in the 21st Century free download by Organizing Committee for the Workshop on the Environment, Committee on Challenges for the Chemical Sciences in the 21st Century, National Research Council**

The report assesses the current state of chemistry and chemical engineering at the interface with environmental science, examines its interactions with related areas of science and technology, and identifies challenges and opportunities for research. The ...

**Science Professionals: Master's Education for a Competitive World pdf free by Committee on Enhancing the Master's Degree in the Natural Sciences, National Research Council**

What are employer needs for staff trained in the natural sciences at the master's degree level? How do master's level professionals in the natural sciences contribute in the workplace? How do master's programs meet or support educational and career goals?...

**Environmental Health Sciences Decision Making: Risk Management, Evidence, and Ethics: Workshop Summary pdf free by Research, and Medicine Roundtable on Environmental Health Sciences**

Environmental health decision making can be a complex undertaking, as there is the need to navigate and find balance among three core elements: science, policy, and the needs of the American public. Policy makers often grapple with how to make appropriate...

**Foundations of Environmental Sustainability: The Coevolution of Science and Policy free epub by Larry Rockwood, Ronald Stewart, Thomas Dietz**

This book reviews and analyzes the period (roughly from the 1950s to the present) when the ''environment'' became an issue as important as economic growth, or war and peace; to assess the current situation, and begin planning for the challenges that lie a...

**Abstract homomorphisms of split Kac-Moody groups download pdf by Pierre-emmanuel Caprace**

This work is devoted to the isomorphism problem for split Kac-Moody groups over arbitrary fields. This problem turns out to be a special case of a more general problem, which consists in determining homomorphisms of isotropic semi simple algebraic groups ...

**Invariant representations of GSp(2) under tensor product with a quadratic character free pdf by Ping-shun Chan**

Let $F$ be a number field or a $p$-adic field. The author introduces in Chapter 2 of this work two reductive rank one $F$-groups, $\mathbf{H_1}$, $\mathbf{H_2}$, which are twisted endoscopic groups of $\textup{GSp}(2)$ with respect to a fixed quadratic ch...

**Introduction to representation theory free download by Pavel Etingof, Oleg Golberg, Sebastian Hensel, Tiankai Liu, Alex Schwendner**

Very roughly speaking, representation theory studies symmetry in linear spaces. It is a beautiful mathematical subject which has many applications, ranging from number theory and combinatorics to geometry, probability theory, quantum mechanics, and quantu...

**Chevalley supergroups download pdf by Fioresi R., Gavarini F.**

**Conjugacy classes in semisimple algebraic groups pdf free by James E. Humphreys**

The book provides a useful exposition of results on the structure of semisimple algebraic groups over an arbitrary algebraically closed field. After the fundamental work of Borel and Chevalley in the 1950s and 1960s, further results were obtained over the...

**Regular subgroups of primitive permutation groups free epub by Martin W. Liebeck, Cheryl E. Praeger, Jan Saxl**

The authors address the classical problem of determining finite primitive permutation groups G with a regular subgroup B. The main theorem solves the problem completely under the assumption that G is almost simple. While there are many examples of regular...

**Unipotent and nilpotent classes in simple algebraic groups and Lie algebras free pdf by Martin W. Liebeck, Gary M. Seitz**

This book concerns the theory of unipotent elements in simple algebraic groups over algebraically closed or finite fields, and nilpotent elements in the corresponding simple Lie algebras. These topics have been an important area of study for decades, with...

**Self-similar groups free download by Volodymyr Nekrashevych**

Self-similar groups (groups generated by automata) initially appeared as examples of groups that are easy to define but have exotic properties like nontrivial torsion, intermediate growth, etc. This book studies the self-similarity phenomenon in group the...

**The Practice of Network Security Monitoring: Understanding Incident Detection and Response pdf free by Richard Bejtlich**

Network security is not simply about building impenetrable walls — determined attackers will eventually overcome traditional defenses. The most effective computer security strategies integrate network security monitoring (NSM): the collection and analysis...

This book investigates the complex, sometimes fraught relationship between phenomenology and the natural sciences. The contributors attempt to subvert and complicate the divide that has historically tended to characterize the relationship between the two fields. Phenomenology has traditionally been understood as methodologically distinct from scientific practice, and thus removed from any claim that philosophy is strictly continuous with science. There is some substance to this thinking, which has dominated consideration of the relationship between phenomenology and science throughout the twentieth century. However, there are also emerging trends within both phenomenology and empirical science that complicate this too stark opposition, and call for more systematic consideration of the inter-relation between the two fields. These essays explore such issues, either by directly examining meta-philosophical and methodological matters, or by looking at particular topics that seem to require the resources of each, including imagination, cognition, temporality, affect, imagery, language, and perception.
